Solar Panels & Why You Should Invest

Updated: Jan 4, 2019

One contract, 4 months and 43 panels later, my family and I went solar. After a few months of video calls to our remarkable representative Eric in California, we finally had solar panels put on our home this weekend with SolarCity. My family decided that owning them was a better option for our unique electrical usage, sun exposure and return on investment over leasing. There are amazing benefits to both options but it varies on every individual family’s situation as to which one is a better fit.

After hearing the benefits of solar panels I'm sure you'll want them too.

1. To begin, it’s clean energy! One of the traditional-outdated ways we produce energy is through the use of fossil fuels to produce electricity. This process involves burning the fossil fuels which emits harmful greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. We humans have been using fossil fuels as our main source of energy since the Industrial Revolution when coal became the dominant supplier for all the new technologies invented. According to the U.S Department of Energy, "Coal has been used for heating since the cave man". No offense to cave men, but I think we've come an extremely long way since then and its time we turn to a better, cleaner and more sustainable form of energy, its 2016 people, come on. Solar panels do not emit poisonous gases and the sun is a natural, infinite source of energy so why not use it!? The sun is the largest nuclear fusion reactor and energy source in our galaxy. So it makes solar panels – the gift that keeps on giving.

2. Secondly, going solar gives you a fixed electrical cost. SolarCity told us exactly what our cost/rate will be for the next 20 years. Utility companies can be unpredictable and electricity rates tend to keep going up. The problem is that the utility companies have to transport the power extremely far from where it is created to where it is actually being used. In order to transport the energy, massive infrastructures are built, including lines, transformers and more, which then have to be maintained. Billions are spent every year due to maintaining this distribution network alone. Theses costs are then justified by increasing our electric bills every year. By putting solar panels on your roof you are generating electricity from the comfort of your own home, pollution free!

3. Solar panels increase the property value of your home. In my family’s case, since we will own our panels it actually increases the value of our home by thousands of dollars! The panels can increase home value up to 4%. In a challenging market, solar panels can give you the upper hand and can be the difference in selling your home. From a study done in California, Forbes explains, “for the average installation, the authors found that solar panels added a $20,194 premium to the sales price of the house based on repeat sales data (houses were in the mid-$500,000 range)”.

4. You get money back for having them! As long as you own your solar energy system, you are eligible for federal tax credits and congress just recently extended this program so you’re just in time. “The effective price to homeowners with subsidies including the federal tax credit is $20,892”, according to Forbes.

Solar panels overall are cheaper, they are the cleanest form of energy and the time is now for to you make the transition and leave your outdated and toxic usage of fossil fuels behind. I am grateful to join millions of others and do my part in reducing my carbon footprint while giving back to the environment while also reducing utility costs, increasing my property value and so much more. Join me and go solar!
